Iodoquinol (or diiodohydroxyquin) is a halogenated hydroxyquinoline.

Antiparasitic Activity:

Iodoquinol is amoebicidal; it is active against cysts and trophozoites of E. histolytica in the bowel lumen.

Pharmacokinetics:

Iodoquinol is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal following oral administration. Most of the drug is excreted in the faeces

Dosage:

Iodoquinol is given orally to adults at a dose of 650 mg three times a day for twenty days for intra luminal amoebic infection. It is not recommended for children.

Adverse Effects:

Side effects of iodoquinol may include gastrointestinal disturbances and, rarely, serious ophthalmological abnormalities including optic atrophy, optic neuritis, and blindness. Mild to moderate skin reactions also have occurred.
