Class:

Bithionol is a chlorinated bis-phenol.

Antiparasitic Activity:

Bithionol has anthelmintic properties and is active against the trematodes Fasciola hepatica (sheep liver fluke) and Paragonimus westermani (lung fluke).

Mechanism of Action:

It is suggested that bithionol is an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation.

Mechanism of Resistance:

Unknown.

Pharmacokinetics:

Bithionol is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is widely distributed throughout the body with peak blood concentrations achieved 4-8 hours of oral administration.

Dosage:

Bithionol is given orally at a dose of 30 to 50 mg per kg of body weight on alternate days for ten to fifteen doses for the treatment of fascioliasis and paragonimiasis in adults and children.

Adverse Effects:

Mild and transient. Diarrhoea and abdominal cramps are commonly. Anorexia, nausea, and urticaria have been reported.
