Dr. Mietzner was raised grew up in Southern
Idaho, graduating from Minico High School in 1977. He studied for two years in
attendance at Concordia College in Portland, OR, and then finished his Bachelor
of Arts and Sciences in 1981 at Portland State University, OR, graduating cum
laude. He chose to continue his studies in the area of microbiology at The
Oregon Health Sciences University where he attained his PhD in 1984. He
continued his post graduate studies in microbiology and biochemistry at the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (1984-85) and at Stanford University
for 1985 through 1991.
For the past 17 years, Dr. Mietzner has been
a faculty member of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics
(recently renamed Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics) at the
University of Pittsburgh. He is also currently is an adjunct Associate
Professor at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Occupational Health in Mesa,
AZ. His expertise is in microbiology, bacterial cloning and biochemistry,
nutrient transport across membranes, peptide chemistry, and infectious
diseases.
Dr. Mietzner has over 60 publications in
well-respected scientific journals, multiple review articles, and has published
a textbook on Microbiology entitled “Microbial Pathogenesis”. He holds several
patents on bacterial vaccines and peptide-based antimicrobials. He has trained
many graduate students, medical fellows, and entertained sabbaticals of fellow
faculty members from internal and external Universities.
