Professor Kager received his MD from the University of Amsterdam and performed his residency in medicine at the Binnengasthuis of the University of Amsterdam. He worked several years both in Zaire (Dem Rep of Congo) and in Kenya. Since 1981 he is employed by the University of Amsterdam, Academic Medical Centre. Since then he has worked in field projects on leishmaniasis, malaria and other infectious diseases  in East Africa and in Southeast Asia. His interests are in epidemiology, clinical aspects, treatment and control , especially of leishmaniasis and malaria. He has served as an advisor to WHO on leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis.
