Joseph Sung obtained his medical degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1983
with the award of the Hong Kong Medical Association Prize of that year. After
finishing his training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, he was elected
Fellow of Royal College of Physicians in London and Edinburgh, Royal College of
Australian College of Physicians as well as the American College of
Gastroenterology. He was conferred the degree of Doctor in Philosophy at the
University of Calgary in 1991 and Doctor of Medicine in 1997 by the Chinese
University of Hong Kong.
Professor Sung is currently Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the
Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also Professor and Chairman at the
Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Prince of Wales Hospital, Chief of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University. In 2003, he was appointed
Director of Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases of the CUHK.
He is serving as the Vice President Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, Vice
President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, President of the Hong Kong
Society of Gastroenterology, President of Hong Kong Society of Digestive
Endoscopy and the Council of the Hong Kong College of Physicians and
professional societies.
He has published over 320 full scientific papers and 260 abstracts in
international conferences. He has been awarded named lecturership from various
countries including Australia (Bushell Lecture of Australian Society of
Gastroenterology), Canada (RD McKenna Lecture), India (DV Dutta Memorial
Orator), Philippines (Francisco Roman Memorial Lecture), South Africa (Solly
Mark Lecture) and Hong Kong (the AJS MacFadzean Lecture). In 2001, he was also
awarded Leader of the Year (Research and Technology Development) by Sing Tao
Daily and Hong Kong iMail and in 2003 again for the same award (Social and
Community Services). The International Research Promotion Council (IRPC) awarded
Professor Sung Eminent Scientist of the Year 2003 and Croucher Foundation named
him Croucher Senior Research Fellow in 2004. For his contributions to health
care in Hong Kong during SARS, the Hong Kong SAR Government awarded him the
Silver Bauhinia Star Award in 2004. |
