            Didier Raoult, M.D., Ph.D. is a graduate of Marseille Medical School and performed internal medicien and infectious disease specialty training there also. He received degrees in bacteriology and virology (1981) and parasitology (1982). He obtained his Ph.D. in microbiology at Montpellier, France, in 1985. He is full Professor at Marseille School of Medicine and is Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory for the University Hospitals. He is President of the Universite de la Mediterranee in Marseille. He is the co-founder of the European Study Group of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Coxiella (EUWOG) for which he is the immediate past president. He is also the founder of the National Rickettsia Reference Center, WHO Collaborative Center, which is the largest laboratory in the world in the field of Rickettsial diseases. He has mentored 66 physicians and 13 Ph.D.s in addition to numerous postdoctoral students from all over the world.

            He has authored over 500 scientific papers and has written 60 book chapters in all of the major textbooks of medicine and infectious diseases. He has edited or authored 11 books in infectious diseases. He participated in the first isolation of Tropheryma whippeli, Rickettsia africae, R. mongolotimonae and R. felis and has described several new Rickettsial diseases.
