Dr. Anaya
completed medical school training at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota,
Colombia. Subsequently he did a research fellowship in surgical infections at
FSFB University Hospital in Bogota and with the Latin American Federation of
Surgical Societies (FELAC) for two years. During this time he developed and was
the Editor of the book for the course "Wound and Surgical Infections" for
surgeons, which was developed by FELAC and has been given in multiple countries
in Central and South America. He then completed a General Surgery Residency at
University of Washington in Seattle. During this time he was the primary
investigator of multiple surgical infection-related studies, for which he was
awarded with the Surgical Infection Society Best Paper Award three years in a
row. After completing his residency, Dr. Anaya received subspecialty training by
completing a Surgical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is
currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Surgical Oncology at Baylor
College of Medicine and the Director of the Cancer Center and the Liver Tumor
Program at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, where he is also an
research scientists in the Houston Health Services Research and Development
Center of Excellence. Dr. Anaya’s research is focused on multidisciplinary
management of cancer, treatment of elderly patients with colorectal and liver
cancer, and surgical infections including necrotizing soft tissue infections and
surgical site infections in patients with cancer. He has received 5 different
grants to support his work in related topics and has coauthored over 12 book
chapters and 38 peer-review articles.
