Dr. Fowler
graduated cum laude from Duke University, where he double-majored in English
and Zoology. He attended medical school at the University of North Carolina,
where he graduated AOA and with honors. After spending a year as a
Rotary Scholar studying malaria in the highland rainforests of Tanzania, he
returned to Duke University and completed a residency in internal medicine,
fellowships in infectious diseases and health services research, a masters in
health science in clinical research, and certification in clinical tropical
medicine. He is currently an assistant professor at Duke University in the
division of infectious diseases. Funded originally by a K23 and currently an
R01 Award from the National Institutes of Health, he has published more than
70 peer reviewed original manuscripts. He was recently awarded Young
Investigator Awards from the American Federation of Medical Research, the
American Society for Microbiology, and Glaxo SmithKline. His current research
interests involve the host-pathogen interaction in gram-positive bacteria.
