Dr. Adam received his medical degree from the University of Illinois in 1981, AOA with honors, and then completed his internal medicine and clinical infectious disease training at the University of Arizona. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in molecular parasitology at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases of the National Institutes of Health in 1988 after which he joined the faculty of the University of Arizona. He is currently a member of the infectious disease section as a Professor of Medicine and Immunobiology. 

His major research interest has been the molecular biology of Giardia with work on antigenic variation, chromosome mapping, genomics and molecular epidemiology. He also has an interest in antifungal therapy, especially for coccidioidomycosis.
