Peter G. Pappas, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the
Medicine/Infectious Diseases Department and a scientist in the Cancer and AIDS
Centers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He
is Board Certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.
After earning his
Bachelor of Science at the
University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and his medical degree at UAB, Dr. Pappas
completed his internship and residency at the University of Washington, Seattle,
where he was Chief Medical Resident. He completed a fellowship in Infectious
Diseases there as well.
A widely published researcher, Dr. Pappas’ research
interests include the epidemiology and treatment of invasive fungal infections.
He has authored or coauthored 175 articles that have appeared in peer-reviewed
journals such as Journal of
Infectious Diseases, New England Journal of Medicine, Clinical Infectious
Diseases, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, and Antimicrobial Agents and
Chemotherapy.
An honored “Top 10 Teacher” and Outstanding Division
Teacher in UAB’s Department of Medicine, Dr. Pappas has been recognized for his
clinical excellence five years in a row by his department.
Among his other activities, Dr. Pappas is Director of the Mycoses Study Group
Education and Research Consortium (MSGERC), an international group with a focus
on clinical research and educational activities pertaining to clinical mycology.
His professional affiliations include the American College of Physicians
(fellow), American Society for Microbiology, Infectious Diseases Society of
America (member), American Federation of Clinical Research, and Southern Society
of Clinical Investigation.
