Carlos M.
Pérez-Vélez, M.D., is an adult and pediatric infectious disease physician at
National Jewish Health. He is originally from Medellín, Colombia, where he
attended medical school and completed a rotating internship, both at the
University of Antioquia. He also worked as a general practitioner for the
Colombian public health service in Yarumal, Antioquia. He did a research
fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Yale University and a residency in
Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at New Jersey Medical School, University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He also obtained a Diploma of Tropical
Medicine and Hygiene (D.T.M.H.) from the Gorgas Memorial Institute of Tropical
and Preventive Medicine of the University of Alabama. After completing Adult
and Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowships at the University of Colorado and
The Children’s Hospital, he joined the faculty of National Jewish Health (NJH).
During his infectious diseases fellowship, he established a tuberculosis (Tb)
diagnostics clinical study site in the province of Valle del Cauca in Colombia.
His research team, the Valle-Colorado Tuberculosis Group, is carrying out a
diagnostics trial comparing alternative specimen collection methods to improve
the microbiological confirmation of Tb in children, and a field trial validating
a new agar culture developed at NJH for the detection of Tb as well as drug
susceptibility testing for drug-resistant strains.
