Professor Zerbini is Full Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the University of Bologna, Italy.

Her main topics of interest concern the study of virus-cell interactions, the pathogenesis and diagnosis of viral infections by innovative molecular technologies, mainly as regard parvovirus B19 and Human Papillomavirus infections. In particular, she has gained wide expertise both in the expression of recombinant viral proteins in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells for the immunological diagnosis and discrimination of acute, chronic or persistent infections in humans and in the development of highly sensitive molecular assays for the detection of viral nucleic acids, the application and validation of the developed diagnostic assays for analysis of clinical samples.
